A smile to brighten up your life

A bright, shining smile really can make a difference to your life, as Derry woman Aideen Craig knows only too well.

A receptionist at Foyle Dental Spa on Queen Street, Aideen was never confident about her teeth and when she saw the fantastic cosmetic remedies available nowadays, she jumped at the chance to achieve the beautiful smile she had always dreamed of. 24-year-old Aideen, from Marlborough in the city, reveals how she felt about her teeth growing up. “I had gaps and one of my front teeth was broken when I was young and I was never happy with my smile,” she admits. “I was so paranoid about smiling and on nights out I was always trying to hide my smile and gaps, I just wanted to be able to smile without worrying.”

When she began working at Foyle Dental Spa, Aideen was delighted to discover that her teeth could be transformed so easily. In April this year, she decided to go for it and had a free consultation. It was decided she needed six porcelain veneers to transform her smile forever. “It’s something I always wanted to get done anyway, regardless of whether I was working at a dentists,” she admits.

“The treatment is so quick, you have it all done within four to six weeks,” she goes on. “After the free consultation, they then did an assessment and took impressions of my mouth. I came back about a week later for my presentation where they show you study models of what your teeth look like now and what they’re going to look like when the work is done – the difference was amazing. Three weeks after that I got my temporary veneers put in, and two weeks after that I got the real ones and I love them! They feel like your own teeth.”

Foyle Dental Spa – Magazine Feature

Aideen was understandably thrilled with the results and how straightforward her treatment was from beginning to end. ”As nervous as I was, I felt absolutely nothing, ” she says. “They have a complete spa ethos here at the practice to try to eliminate nervousness, so we have scented candles, relaxing music, TV monitors so you can watch TV in the chair, and skylights so you can look into the clouds! We also have headphones if you don’t like the sound of the drill, so when I was in the chair, I listened to the whole Take That album and then it was all over.” ”This has really made such a difference to me, I was elated! It sounds silly, but I always said that if I won the lotto I would get new teeth. I didn’t even need to win the lottery and now I get complimented all the time about my nice, white teeth, which is lovely.”

Aideen also reveals that the porcelain veneers used at Foyle Dental Spa are of an exceptionally high quality. “We use a really high quality lab – the same London lab that’s used in the TV show Ten Years Younger – and they make every single tooth individually so your smile is tailor-made for you. The porcelain they use reflects the light and so the veneers never look fake. Everyone comments on me having a nice white smile – I’m sure they don’t realise that they’re veneers. It’s a really natural looking smile. it’s so easy to eat, they feel so comfortable and you don’t even notice them.”

Aideen, while still nervous about going to the dentist in general, praises all those who helped create her bright gleaming smile. ”Six veneers made the biggest difference to my whole face. ”I would definitely say that if you are unhappy with your smile, come in and have a free consultation and speak to the dentist. ”It’s definitely worth finding out what they can do for you and is so worth it.

Usually, it’s a lot more straightforward than people think too, ” she adds. Foyle Dental Spa also offer different types of sedation for those particularly petrified of the dentist’s chair to make the process as painless and comfortable as possible.

They are also competitively priced. For instance, each porcelain veneer Aideen received cost £525 and the practice offers dental finance so clients can pay up for treatment by direct debits. All in all, it seems that a glittering Hollywood smile is not so far-fetched an idea nowadays. As Aideen says: “It was so worth it.”

Dr. Victoria Kelly, Cosmetic Dentist, Foyle Dental Spa

Who?

Foyle Dental Spa has recently attracted one of the most talented cosmetic dentists of her generation to a flourishing practice in Derry’s Queen Street. Born and reared in Coleraine, Victoria Kelly graduated in Dentistry from Glasgow University in 2005. Continuing her studies she was one of four postgraduate students to gain a place on the Northern Ireland General Professional Dental Training Scheme.

There she gained experience in general practice as well as in oral surgery and special needs dentistry. Victoria also served for a year as a Senior House Officer in the Oral and Maxillo-Facial unit of Altnagelvin Hospital. However, her main area of expertise is in the rapidly advancing field of cosmetic restorative dentistry – smile design, white fillings, teeth whitening and treatment under sedation for anxious patients.

Victoria is currently undertaking advanced training in cosmetic and restorative dentistry in Birmingham. She is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Faculty of Dental Surgery in Edinburgh. And she has also completed her sedation training with the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry.

As if that weren’t enough: she recently completed the Rathlin Run Challenge; raised £500 via a Macmillan Coffee Morning with her best friend; is a participant of her church’s charitable activities and a keen photographer; and ran the Dublin Marathon last month in a time of 4 hours and 3 minutes in aid of the Dialysis Unit at Belfast City Hospital. Is it any wonder she indulges the odd glass of Merlot!

Why?

Cosmetic dentistry is the fastest growing area of the dental profession. The very best smile makeovers can take ten years off your face and give you a whole new reason to see the funny side of life. Offered the choice of a fur coat or a dazzling smile for Christmas – most women wouldn’t have to think twice! So if your loved one is… makin’ his list – there’s no harm in leaving a few not so subtle hints lying around – starting with this feature under the remote control.

Where?

Foyle Dental Spa located at 16c Queen Street in the heart of Derry’s Georgian quarter, is a showcase of cutting edge dental technology. In the tranquil surroundings of this state-of-the-art spa you will feel totally relaxed before, during and after your dental treatment session. The plush surroundings have the feel of a boutique hotel, soothing music is piped into every suite and you can even tune into your favourite feel good movie or DVD while you’re in the chair.

The aroma of delicately scented candles hangs lightly in the air of this de-luxe sanctuary and the staff, from the receptionists to the dental nurses and dentists help create a unique experience. At Foyle Dental Spa you’ll actually look forward to your next visit to the dentist. Who’d have thought a visit to the dentist could be so relaxing?

Children’s Dentistry Derry/ Londonderry | Children’s Dentist | Foyle Dental Spa

Thanks to a new concept in children’s dentistry, local kids and parents have plenty to smile about. Quietly, using new techniques and latest technologies a new vision is emerging that will transform the dental health of children here. The man leading this velvet revolution is dentist Paul Cochrane of Foyle Dental Spa.

The FDS team are confident they can raise a generation of local kids without fillings or extractions – if they begin to treat them early and families follow their preventative strategy. It’s a bold statement, especially in region ranked among the worst for child dental health on these islands. But it’s a pledge that’s entirely evidence- based, the pioneering dentist insists.

Some 80 per cent of the patients Paul treats at Foyle Dental Spa are kids. The state-of-the-art practice puts a special emphasis on children and its family-orientated ethos permeates every aspect of the service. “At Foyle Dental Spa we look on excellent dental care as an investment in your child’s future. We all want the best for our kids and investing in their dental health in childhood pays massive returns.”

Underpinning the spa’s ethos is the emerging American concept of ‘a dentist for life’. “The future is our kids – by changing mindsets, raising expectations and above all concentrating on preventing decay from infancy on – we can deliver a new concept in dentistry to Ireland – north and south.” “Think of it as a journey, today’s 2- year-olds are the 4-year-olds, 10-yearolds, teenagers of the future.

If we see them early enough and we treat them into adulthood – then they can reach adulthood without fillings.” “Quality dentistry is about so much more than working on someone’s mouth – it’s about good communication, education. “Our ethos is also open, transparent, honest – it’s about building trust. “Traditionally there’s been too little focus on those aspects of dentistry. And in the past the profession didn’t fully recognise preventative needs,” Paul insists. Patient care, for both adults and children, is a top priority. And it’s no coincidence, Paul suggests, that the areas that have the worst childhood dental health also have the worst adult dental health.

Transparency

“I’ve a special interest in quality child dental care and we’re encouraged here at FDS to develop our interests with a view to establishing the practice as a centre of excellence.” Khalid Hussain, principal dentist and owner of Foyle Dental Spa was quick to identify Paul’s enthusiasm. “Few people have his passion, his wisdom, his expertise. At Foyle Dental Spa we want to be part of the change,” he says of his latest recruit. “We put forward a range of options – we don’t say – ‘this is what we’re giving you’; we say ‘this is what we’re offering’ and you make the ultimate decision. It’s all about making informed choices,” says practice manager Anne Crawley.

At Foyle Dental Spa Paul tailors the treatment to the specific needs of each and every patient – child or adult, mindful that every patient is an individual with individual needs. “We all want what’s best for our children – as a new father I know that instinct is written on our DNA. “But there is sometimes a lack of knowledge out there. We try to make parents see the importance of good dental care for their kids and to prioritize it.

Foyle Dental Spa Local Women feature February 2011 01

Anxiety-free

“We encourage them to bring in a DVD of their choice – a feel-good movie or favourite show to help them relax. We talk to the parents – we don’t apportion blame, we work as a team – we do our part in the surgery and you and your child do your bit in the home. It’s an entirely holistic approach.

“And we work hard to make the parent feel comfortable, at ease and informed.”

Integrated service

“We offer NHS dentistry to all children resident in Northern Ireland. We register all children with the NHS and we also offer private dental care to children and adults in the cross border area. In our view, it’s all about being fair. Identifying the options available to parents, costing them individually and then letting the parents make thechoice.”

Dr. Paul Cochrane

The son of a Coleraine farming family, Paul Cochrane’s no stranger to graft. While his journey to the top of his profession involved a lot of hard work – including the best part of the last 10 years at post graduate level – his passion for dentistry has never waned. Indeed his recent appointment to the team at Foyle Dental Spa in Queen Street, has, if anything, redoubled his commitment to change. And he became a dad just six weeks ago – a life changing departure point he’s relishing in this family oriented practice.

What’s your academic background?

My primary degree was in Science and Anatomy from Dundee University; I then studied Dentistry also at Dundee graduating with Honours and I then undertook an MA in Healthcare Law and Ethics at, you’ve guessed it, Dundee. I currently lecture for the university in the subject and I’m a course coordinator in Law and Ethics at the university.

How might medical ethics make a difference?

My longer term aim is to help patients who’ve been harmed – get their redress.

Foyle Dental Spa Local Women feature February 2011 02

What’s different about your approach?

Where do I start … our approach is entirely inclusive – we impart our knowledge to mum and dad as much as the child. Educating the parents in a way that’s non-judgemental, straightforward and non-intimidatory.

Ours is an extremely supportive environment. It’s important to offer reassurance to the parent/s when they’ve done something that’s right And the full range of Foyle Dental Spa’s services and techniques are available to the parents and that includes cosmetic dentistry, gum and oral health, endodontics. A very wide range of skills are represented within the team.

I live in this area – I don’t want people to be over awed or to settle for anything less – I want to be open and honest with the people I meet.

When should your child first see their dentist?

The earlier the opportunity we have to see the child the earlier we can reassure them that there’s nothing to fear.

What if my child’s distressed at even the thought of going to the dentist?

That usually indicates a bad experience in the past or at least the perception that something bad or painful lies ahead. We start off by creating totally different associations in your child’s head.

It’s not our job to create bad memories – if anything we would hope that a child won’t even be able to recall their first visit to the dentist. We can control anxiety levels – the result we are looking for is a good experience at your dentist. If we do that – we’ve won.

Have you a guiding principle?

My approach to everything I do is evidence based – I don’t work on hunches. In NI I’m sad to say, the guidelines are poor. But I follow the UK guidance for children and adults – that makes me predictable, consistent, safe. I don’t take risks and I think when it comes to putting your child’s health into someone else’s hands, that’s something every parent needs to know.

Hobbies?

With my first child, a daughter, born just six weeks ago – my family is my hobby at the minute. I’m from a strong farming background. My family still have a beef farm on the edge of Coleraine – so my relaxation is the farm.

Sports?

I love all sports but especially football. I’ve also run a few half marathons – but I don’t have much time to run at the moment. My family are crucial and I’m very deeply committed to that.

How do you like to be known?

Paul, not Dr, not Dr Paul and certainly not Dr Cochrane.

Do you need to see your dentist every six months?

There’s no hard and fast rule, when it comes to your mouth, one size definitely won’t fit all. Some people will need to see their dentist more frequently than once every six months: for others – once yearly is sufficient.

Are you a sweet grinch?

I’m not anti-sugar – to take that stance would be pointless. We offer advice on how to eat sugar safely – it would be wrong, unhelpful and a wee bit judgemental to say ‘kids shouldn’t eat sweets’.

What does your mouth say about your overall health?

There is a massive link between dental health and general health – plaque and heart problems certain cardiac surgeons won’t operate if you’ve an infection in your mouth.

Do you get what you pay for in dentistry?

At Foyle Dental Spa we think you get much more than what you pay for. There are no limits on the options we can provide in both child and adult dentistry. And there’s no limit on the techniques and materials we use. Dental technology is moving so quickly that the only way to keep apace is to constantly train and retrain and we have the opportunity to do that here.

Tan, hair, nails, makeup… teeth?

If you are lucky enough to have home bleaching trays in your bathroom cupboard and a stash of whitening gel in your fridge then a one night stand with your tooth whitening system is enough to give your teeth a little brightening before your night out.

Some high level systems only need to be used for one hour some others for four hours. Just remember that for 48 hours after bleaching you have to stick to a ‘white diet’, a good tip is not to eat or drink anything that would stain a white shirt. Champagne is a good substitute for red wine!

The unwanted guest

Ever been out for dinner with friends and you notice that dreaded piece of food stuck between their teeth? If you are a good friend you will tell them! Don’t let it happen to you and carry some floss or mini interdental brush in your bag, I always recommend TePe®. But remember as my vice-principal used to say at school ‘never groom yourself in public’ so keep them for the ladies’!

Jack frost bites

Tooth sensitivity can be worse in the cold weather. There are a few ways you can minimise sensitivity and prevent it getting worse;

Cut back on acidic foods and drinks in your diet and the frequency by which you consume them

Use a soft toothbrush and try to avoid scouring your teeth; you only want to remove plaque not enamel.

Invest in an anti sensitivity toothpaste such as Sensodyne.

If it gets really bad see your dentist; you may need a small area protected with anti-sensitivity gloss or a white filling.

Fresh air

Fresh breath can mean simply just brushing your teeth morning and night and perhaps a third time just before you head out for the evening. Bad breath can be caused by many factors including; bacteria causing Infection and gum disease, smoking, some medications, dry mouth, tonsil stones, starvation, some foods (eg curry, garlic), some diseases. To maintain good oral hygiene thorough tooth brushing and tongue brushing is imperative as well as flossing. Mouthwashes are a great adjunct but not to be substituted for brushing, these are best used at a time if the day when you would not normally brush your teeth. Research has found that powered toothbrushes with an oscillating/rotating movement were more effective in removing plaque and reducing gingivitis than a manual toothbrush1 (look out for them in the January sales). If you do suffer from persistent bad breath ensure you see your dentist for a checkup.

Let them shine

The snow we have had has brought with it a welcomed chivalry; pedestrians walk on the road and drivers slowly drive round them with a polite nod; people give each other knowing nods and smiles as they slip and slide towards one another. Smiling even when you don’t feel like it will make you feel better, try it out…

At Foyle Dental Spa we are taking new registrations for NHS and private patients as well as offering FREE Cosmetic Smile Makeover and Sedation Consultations. Call now for an appointment on: 028 7136 1181

The Effects of Pregnancy in Oral Health | Dental Care in Pregnancy

There has been a baby boom in my social circle and so I felt this would be a great topic to discuss this month.

Pregnancy can affect your mouth in a number of ways; one of the best is that you are entitled to free NHS dental care if you are expecting or had a baby in the past 12months, so if you are registered with an NHS dentist there are no excuses! (Incidentally here at Foyle Dental Spa we are registering new NHS patients at present). There are a number of oral conditions that can occur while you are pregnant these include:

Pregnancy gingivitis

Your gums can bleed more easily when pregnant and even become red, sore and swollen. It usually affects the front of the mouth and so is more noticeable to you. It is thought that this is due to hormonal and immune system changes in your body.

It can commence from the first trimester, peaks around the eighth month and usually settles after the baby is born. It is not a condition to worry about but does need treatment.

Treatment involves cleaning! Tooth brushing and flossing twice daily will disrupt the bacteria in the plaque that your immune system is reacting to. Be sure to angle the toothbrush a little into the gums to clean under the gum pocket (your dentist or hygienist can demonstrate this). Your gums will naturally bleed during this but don’t hold back, cleaning them is most important. Your dentist or hygienist can carry out professional cleaning which can help ease the condition.

Foyle Dental Spa Local Women February 2011

Pyogenic granuloma

This is a fleshly lump that grows out of the gum and is quite alarming for the patient. They are not cancerous or dangerous although they can bleed easily, be uncomfortable and unsightly. Again this is a reaction of your gum tissue to the bacteria in the plaque on your teeth, so cleaning is important to keep the plaque away. They are mostly likely to develop in the second trimester but are rare. Pyogenic granulomas usually disappear after the baby is born but if they are a real problem they can be easily removed.

Oral Thrush

This is an infection caused by a natural yeast; Candida albicans. It normally lives in your mouth at low levels but changes in your immune system or to the natural bacteria in your body can lead to an overgrowth of these yeast, resulting in thrush. It looks like a thick white coating of the mouth but underneath it the gums, cheeks and tongue are red and sore. See your GP or your dentist if you develop this, it is easily treated with anti-fungals some in the form of lozenges.

Erosion

Some pregnant women have the unfortunate case of morning sickness with frequent vomiting. This results in acid from the stomach contacting the teeth; it is a very strong acid and is erosive to the teeth. Protection is the weapon in this case. If you do vomit avoid brushing your teeth immediately after as they will have been weakened by the acid and brushing will take a layer of enamel away; rinse your mouth out with water or fluoride mouthwash immediately to remove the acid. If you don’t have a suitable mouthwash to hand then place a pea sized amount of toothpaste on your tongue and smear this over your teeth for a few minutes, the fluoride mouthwashes and toothpastes will neutralize the acid. Allow a 20 minute delay before you brush your teeth gently.

At Foyle Dental Spa we are taking new registrations for NHS and private patients as well as offering FREE Cosmetic Smile Makeover and Sedation Consultations. Call now for an appointment on: 028 7136 1181

Replacing a Lost Tooth | Dental Plates | Dentures | Dental Implants

Commonly I find it is the appearance of the space that bothers patients the most especially when it is at the front of the mouth. Leaving the space can be a reasonable solution especially when the space is at the back of the mouth but if that is not an option there are a number of ways in which a lost tooth may be replaced….

A dental plate

I personally detest calling them ‘dentures’ as it conjures images of false teeth that stay in a glass beside the bed! Plates can be made from either a metal or plastic frame and can replace one or more teeth. They don’t have to be noticeable either; you would be surprised to know who is actually wearing them!

A modern version uses a lovely light and flexible plastic base that is unobtrusive in the mouth and matches the colour of the teeth and gums perfectly; they can even incorporate tooth or gum coloured clasps for maximum fixation. Unfortunately they must be left out at night to let the gums ‘breathe’ but not in a glass on your bedside table!

Foyle Dental Spa Local Women March 2011

Bridging the gap

A small false tooth may be held in place in the space by attachment to a crown or metal wing on one or more anchor teeth. The type used depends on the position and quality of the anchor tooth or teeth. A bridge is fixed in place ‘permanently’ and it’s lifespan is dependent on that of the tooth or teeth to which it is fixed. This sounds very complicated however they are commonly used; most dentists will have model versions to show you what a bridge looks like. It is also possible to have a personalised wax model made to see what the bridge will look like before committing to it.

They do need looked after; diligent cleaning in and around the bridge unit and the supporting anchor teeth is very important.

Dental Implants

Basically this involves the insertion of a metal screw into the jaw bone. The screw integrates with the surrounding bone and provides a foundation on which a single tooth, a bridge or a denture may be attached. The number of implants required depends on the size of space to be filled. The insertion can be carried out in a qualified surgery under sterile conditions and while you are awake! Implants require very detailed planning and many factors are to be considered including your medical history, some surgeons will not place implants in smokers as smoking affects the health of the tissues in the mouth.

All of these options are dependent on whether your particular case is suitable and require careful thought and planning. Your dentist can advise you and suggest which choice would be best.

It is important to have the confidence to smile and if it means exploring a few options to restore a space that is bothering you it will be will worth it. Look into filling that void!

At Foyle Dental Spa we are taking new registrations for NHS and private patients as well as offering FREE Cosmetic Smile Makeover and Sedation Consultations. Call now for an appointment on: 028 7136 1181

The loss of a tooth or teeth can lead to a number of issues; an unsightly space, a food trap, decreased chewing function, speech alteration and sagging facial shape.

Tooth decay can occur at any age and prevention is the best cure. It occurs when bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars from your food. Over time these bacteria build a mesh work of sugars and other substances to form plaque; the creamy white build up you may find on your teeth. The bacteria produce acids which nibble into the enamel of the tooth surface and then form a cavity.

Tooth Decay Prevention Tips

Cut back on sugary foods and drinks (especially carbonated) and the frequency you have them, if you like a sugary treat or drink limit it to mealtimes.

Brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste; flossing daily prevents plaque building up in between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Fluoride mouthwashes are of benefit when used at a different time of day to tooth brushing.

Children and teenagers at risk of decay can have fissure sealants placed on their molar and premolar teeth.

Children can take fluoride tablets to help strengthen their baby teeth and the developing adult teeth.

Attend your dentist for routine check-ups.

Tooth Decay Diagnosis

Examination and x-ray are the first port of call to diagnose dental decay. Here at Foyle Dental Spa we have the latest pen-sized laser detection aid to diagnose even the smallest spot of decay at the earliest stage allowing preservation of the tooth substance.

Tooth Decay Damage

If left untreated, decay in a tooth will grow, often slowly. A common area is in between the teeth (where you should floss) and you may not even know it is there until toothache develops. The decay will produce an area of weakness in the tooth that may break when eating or slowly crumble leaving a cavity.

Toothache results from inflammation around the nerve in the tooth as a result of the toxins in the decay. If this happens the tooth may need a root treatment.

Tooth Decay Treatment

If caught early some decay spots can actually remineralise with a bit of help and avoid a filling. Unfortunately if the decay has passed into the dentine of the tooth a filling is needed. There is a wide choice of filling materials available on the NHS and privately. Cosmetic fillings include; metal-free white fillings made from resin, porcelain/ceramic fillings and gold fillings.

Don’t delay, get a check up and don’t decay!

At Foyle Dental Spa we are taking new registrations for NHS and private patients as well as offering FREE Cosmetic Smile Makeover and Sedation Consultations. Call now for an appointment on: 028 7136 1181
